Mrs. John Whitehead, wife of miner, and two of her children (or grandchildren) in the kitchen of her three-room house. Mrs. and Mrs. John Whitehead, their six children and six grandchildren live here. This house, built on company owned land was built by Mr. Whitehead's half brother at no expense for materials or labor to the company; the builder (half brother) was to receive the use of the house rent-free for three years and at the end of this period the ownership would revert to the company. The brother moved away at the end of one year, receiving no cash settlement from the company. The house now rents for six dollars monthly. Series Description From the Series: Arranged in chronological order by following Lee’s career, this series consists of 352 photographs. Two-hundred forty-eight of these photographs by Russell Lee were taken for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) between 1936 and 1942. The gems of this part of the collection are the 130 vintage prints; most are complete with captions typed on the back by FSA staff.
